Local favourite Knud Storgaard carded a five under par 67 for share of the lead alongside Alessandro Tadini after the completion of weather-affected second round of the ECCO Tour Championship presented by Thomas Björn and Mercedes Benz at Lübker Golf Resort on Saturday morning.
Storgaard finished his second round early Saturday after Friday’s play was cancelled due to a waterlogged course, finishing off an impressive back nine in which he scored four birdies, on the 12th, 13th, 16th and 17th, and not a single bogey.
After a one under par opening nine, the Dane finished his round five under par and stormed up the leaderboard to join Tadini at the top on six under par for the tournament, after the Italian had finished his round on Thursday evening before play was suspended due to lack of light.
“I was striking the ball really well,” said Storgaard, who held a European Tour card in 1998 and 2000 before his career was knocked back by serious illness.
“I have been doing so for the last two days here and this time I got the score I was looking for. I played on this course in the ECCO Tour tournament two weeks ago and I live quite close to Lübker so I know this course well.
“I’ve learned how to play the course a little bit and what places to avoid so that has really helped me this week and now I would like to go on and get a high finish here and maybe even return to the Challenge Tour through this event with a win.”
Daniel Denison and Dane Lasse Jensen, who signed for second rounds of 66 and 70 respectively on Thursday, remained tied for second on five under par for the tournament and one shot behind the leaders.
Pierre Relecom, joint leader after round one, was still in the hunt after he finished a two over par second round of 74 on Saturday morning.
The Belgian dropped two shots on the fifth and eighth holes on what was his back nine following a 10th tee start.
Matthew Cryer was the only other player to threaten the top of the leaderboard on Saturday morning after the Englishman finished off a round of 69 to join Bernd Ritthammer, Steven Tiley, Charles-Edouard Russo, Thomas Feyrsinger, Benn Barham and Relecom at tied for fifth on four under.
