Stenson set for Turkish Airlines Open

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, the current leader of The Race to Dubai, has confirmed his participation in the inaugural US$7million Turkish Airlines Open.

The 37 year old has been in magnificent form this summer, becoming the first European to win the FedEx Cup on the US PGA Tour last month, and will tee it up in the 78-man tournament – the penultimate event of the 2013 European Tour season – which will take place at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal, Belek, Antalya, from November 7-10.

“It has been a great few months for me but there is still plenty to play for,” said Stenson. “I am in a good position to win the European money list and a strong performance in Turkey would certainly help me achieve that.”

Stenson is currently a career-high of fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking after enjoying a remarkable run in the last three months. In addition to his victory at the Tour Championship, the seven-time European Tour winner triumphed at the Deutsche Bank Championship and finished second and third at The Open Championship and US PGA Championship respectively.

The Turkish Airlines Open will also feature World Number One Tiger Woods and forms a central part of the Final Series, the new four-tournament conclusion to The Race to Dubai, which comprises the US$7million BMW Masters, the US$8.5million WGC-HSBC Champions, the Turkish Airlines Open and the US$8 million DP World Tour Championship, Dubai – offering a combined prize fund of US$30.5million.

Ahmet Ali Ağaoğlu, President of the Turkish Golf Federation, said: “We are thrilled to be able to welcome a player of Henrik’s calibre to Turkey. We are certain he will be impressed with what the country has to offer as a golfing destination and believe he will very much enjoy his week.”

Faruk Cizmecioglu, Chief Marketing Officer at Turkish Airlines, said: “It is fantastic to see another one of the world’s best players committing to the tournament. Henrik has enjoyed a marvellous season so far and it would be of no surprise to anyone if that was to continue in Turkey.”
