Stenson named Swedish Athlete of the Year

Henrik Stenson, the reigning Open Champion and Race to Dubai winner, has been named Male Sports Athlete of the Year at the Swedish Sports Awards in recognition of his fine achievements on the world stage in 2016.

The 40 year old, who gets his 2017 season underway at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Thursday, was honoured at a ceremony in Stockholm on Monday night, picking up the top award for the second time in three years.

He also became the first male golfer to receive the Svenska Dagbladet’s – the Gold Medal for an outstanding sporting achievement – in recognition of his unforgettable Open Championship victory in July when he triumphed in a titanic battle with Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon to win his first Major Championship.

Stenson went on to claim his second Race to Dubai crown in three years in November and was named European Tour Golfer of the Year, also for a second time, the following month.
