Stenson moves into contention

Henrik Stenson surged up the leaderboard in the third round of the Nordea Masters with a four under par 68.

After a two-hour suspension for a morning thunderstorm at PGA Sweden National, the 39 year old World Number Four started eagle-birdie to make early progress, and finished by birdieing the par five 18th to move to six under par for the tournament.

By that point the last few groups were under way, with another Swede, Alex Noren, moving into the lead at ten under par thanks to four birdies in his first five holes.

Stenson said: “I played pretty well. It was pretty tough once again, and I hope the wind stays up this afternoon.

“I was on the wrong side of the draw the first two days with the wind in the morning in the first round and easing up in the afternoon, then starting getting a bit stronger again in the afternoon yesterday. It’s going to be tough for the guys out there.

“I’m happy with my score. I left a couple of shots out there and made two bogeys on the par threes where I three-putted, but I hit a lot of good stuff as well so all in all it was a solid round.

“At least I’m in with a chance now. It was a momentum killer to three-putt 17 but I got it back on 18 and at six under you never know.

“I might be four or five back at the end of the day, maybe more, but it’s definitely going to thin out a bit at the top. That stretch coming in, down 16, 17 and 18, is really tough in the wind.

“I’ll do my best tomorrow. I was in a much better position last year, but I’ve still got a little chance. The support is great again today and there’s a big crowd out there. At least I was able to give them a bit of a showing.”

England’s Callum Shinkwin was also taking advantage of ‘moving day’, carding a three under par 69 to move to five under overall.
