Stenson charges into contention

Henrik Stenson’s joint-best round-of-the-day saw the Swede climb to second in the Puerto Rico Open.

American George McNeill holds a one stroke lead after the third round, the 36 year old birdieing the final two holes to move to 14 under and snatch a narrow advantage over Stenson and Kevin Stadler.

Overnight leader Matt Jones was a stroke further back after the Australian could only card an even round of 72.

Stenson surged into contention as he collected eight birdies in his 65.

The former Ryder Cup star has struggled for form over the last 18 months, but showed signs of returning to his brilliant best with a 20th placed finish at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

He said: “I’m moving in the right direction for sure.  I was really happy with my striking in Dubai. I’m still coming back from the key hole surgery I had on my left knee in early December. So early on there was a lot of rehab and it was tough to get going – the first two tournaments I played, I was struggling to walk that many days in a row.

“In a funny way, it was probably a good thing that I missed the cut, because it meant I had time to recover. Then in Dubai I played five days in a row, and it felt pretty good, so that was the first time I knew my knee was back.

“It gave me confidence to take into this week, and if I can stay patient like I have done these first few days and chip and putt well, hope I’ll get a chance to finish it off tomorrow."

American Scott Brown also went around the Trump International Golf Course in Rio Grande in seven under today to be in a three-way tie for fifth on ten under.

Joining him were rising Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa, who bogeyed the par five 18th, and countryman Daniel Summerhays.
