Steady Brand Jnr edging towards win

Gordon Brand Jnr recovered from a nervous start to his final round to edge towards a maiden Senior Tour victory in the Matrix Jersey Classic.

The former Ryder Cup player, who started the day with a six stroke lead, bogeyed the first hole after a poor opening tee shot but steadied himself with eight consecutive pars to reach the turn one over par.

His playing partner Graham Banister birdied the first hole to close the gap to four shots but then dropped a shot himself on the third hole to ensure Brand Jnr took a five stroke lead into the back nine.

Behind him Carl Mason is making a final day charge, reaching nine under par for the tournament and a share of second place through the 12th hole.

Mason could become the first player to pass the €2million career earnings mark on the Senior Tour if he finished alone in second place.

However it is Brand Jnr who has one hand on the trophy at La Moye Golf Club as he chases his maiden European Senior Tour title.

The Scot opened with a round of 63 and extended his lead with a 66 in the second round.
