Spieth stretches Masters lead

Jordan Spieth extended his lead at the Masters Tournament to four shots on a tough day for scoring at Augusta National.

The defending champion, who became the first player in Masters history to hold the outright lead for five consecutive rounds with a 66 on Thursday, was level par through seven holes in the second round as the rest of the field battled with the wind.

The American's lead was extended to three shots before he even teed off and when he birdied the first and third, it was up to five and he was threatening to run away with things.

A double-bogey on the fifth dropped him back to six under, though, and Sergio Garcia, Søren Kjeldsen and Justin Rose were all in the group in a share of second.

A 14-foot putt yielded a birdie on the first and when Spieth's approach on the third left him a tap-in, the World Number Two looked to be in total control.

Four putts on the fifth, though, three of them from inside seven feet, brought the field back into contention, and he followed that with a 17-foot par save after a wayward tee-shot.

Kjeldsen had gotten to four under with a birdie on the second but dropped shots on the fourth and ninth to drop to two under after 16 holes, alongside Garcia who had played 15.

Rose made a bogey-birdie-bogey start to also sit at two under, with clubhouse leader Danny Lee and American Scott Piercy.

Rory McIlroy, chasing a career Grand Slam of Major Championships, was another player who got to four under early in his round thanks to birdies on the second and third, but he double-bogeyed the fourth with a three-putt after finding the sand.

He dropped a shot on the next and the 11th to drop to level par but picked a stroke back up on the 13th.

Brandt Snedeker was also at one under in the clubhouse with amateur Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson at the same mark, with just 11 players under par.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Shane Lowry, Henrik Stenson and Danny Willett were all at level par.
