Spieth makes early Masters move

Defending champion Jordan Spieth picked up where he left off in 2015 as he opened up a one-shot lead in round one of the Masters Tournament.

The World Number Two dominated at Augusta National last year, posting a record-equalling 18 under par total for a first Major Championship win, and he followed that by quickly picking up a second at the US Open Championship.

The American opened with a brilliant 64 last term and was on course to go low again as he got to four under after 12 holes on Thursday to lead Daniel Berger by one shot.

Hideki Matsuyama was then at two under, with a strong chasing pack a further shot back.

After a good up-and-down to save par on the first, Spieth birdied the third and sixth before putting his approach on the eighth to four feet for another gain. A further birdie followed on the tenth to move him a shot clear of Berger, who had gains on the third, fourth and eighth to turn in 33.

Matsuyama had bogeyed the first but gains on the second, seventh and ninth moved him up the leaderboard.

A host of European Tour Members were then in the group at one under including Rafa Cabrera Bello, Darren Clarke, Jamie Donaldson, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Thongchai Jaidee, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood.

American Kevin Streelman was also in that group and he had set the clubhouse target with his opening 71.

Rory McIlroy was due out in the last group of the day as he chases the career Grand Slam of Major Championships, with the wind expected to make conditions trickier for the later starters.
