Southgate wins as seeds stumble in Scotland

Matthew Southgate is through to the second round of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play but the sixth seed was taken right to the wire by Kristoffer Broberg at Archerfield.

The Englishman is enjoying a remarkable season just 12 months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer and then regaining his card at the Qualifying School.

A tie for fourth at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation represented his best finish on the European Tour and he then achieved his best result in a Major Championship as he finished in a tie for 12th at The Open Championship.

He is still in search of a first win and has a chance of getting that this week after beating Broberg on the 19th hole on Thursday. There was never more than a hole in it and it took a stunning approach to the first play-off hole to secure the win for Southgate.

He will next face Michael Hoey, who was a 4 and 3 winner over David Drysdale.

James Morrison set up a last-32 tie with Graeme Storm after he romped through, beating Alvaro Quiros 6 and 5.

A birdie-birdie start saw the Englishman quickly move two up against Quiros and while the Spaniard won the fourth, Morrison won the fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 13th to ease to victory with seven birdies.

Storm was a 2 and 1 victor over 22nd seed Tommy Fleetwood.

David Horsey was another convincing winner who claimed the scalp of a seed as he beat Sébastien Gros 6 and 4 and he will next face Haydn Porteous, who needed 19 holes to overcome John Parry.

Local favourite Marc Warren dumped out fifth seed Jorge Campillo as a run of four birdies in five holes from ninth helped him to a 3 and 2 triumph.

"It's a great event, I really enjoyed the format last year," said last year's beaten semi-finalist. "Something a little bit different for us and obviously a little bit of pressure from the first round.

The first match is a complete knockout, so it's nice to get through the first one - Marc Warren

Next up for the Scot will be Swede Magnus A Carlsson, who was seven under for 15 holes in beating Chase Koepka 4 and 3.

Another victorious Scot was eighth seed Richie Ramsay, who overcame a late fightback from last year's semi-finalist David Howell to win by one hole.

"It was sort of a clutch way to win it down the stretch," said Ramsay. "I think I just need to play the way I did today but a little bit more committed on some longer shots.

I drove the ball ridiculously. It was in the middle of every fairway, so that's a big advantage - Richie Ramsay

Next up for him is Roope Kakko, the Finn made an eagle on the last to beat Grégory Havret after 20 holes.

Oliver Fisher needed 22 holes to overcome American Peter Uihlein and he set up an all-English clash with Simon Khan - a 2 and 1 winner over Pablo Larrazábal.

Robert Rock was another English winner as he beat Gary Stal 3 and 2 to set up a match against Johan Carlsson. The Swede was four up at the turn against Morten Ørum Madsen and emerged a 2 and 1 winner.

Prom Meesawat needed 18 holes to defeat David Lipsky and he will next face Chris Paisley, who beat Benjamin Hebert 2 and 1.
