Solid start from leading pair

Jason Day and Jordan Spieth both got their closing rounds of the US PGA Championship safely under way but for the second day running it was Victor Dubuisson making a mark on the leaderboard at Whistling Straits.

Day brought a two shot lead over Spieth into the final day and both of them found the green in regulation and took two putts to make par on the first as none of the chasing pack managed to make inroads barring Anirban Lahiri, who birdied the first for the third time this week to move to ten under and within five shots of Day.

But further down the leaderboard, Dubuisson birdied six of his opening 12 holes with just a single bogey to move to eight under.

The Frenchman finished in a tie for seventh at Valhalla last year and was in a share for 12th as he looked to finish in the top ten at the final Major Championship for the second year running.

Justin Rose and Branden Grace had both parred the first to remain three adrift of Day while Martin Kaymer was a further shot back through two holes.

World Number One and defending champion Rory McIlroy began with five pars but produced a brilliant up and down after finding trouble off the tee on the par four sixth to make his first birdie of the day.

Another followed on the seventh and McIlroy was eight under alongside Brooks Koepka who was one under for the day through four holes.

As well as McIlroy's impressive rescue from the rough, the sixth also yielded its first two eagles of the week on Sunday as Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson both got down in two.

Watson hit a 330 yard drive to the green and holed from 14 feet while Mickelson found a greenside bunker but produced an incredible chip in and both men were in the group at six under.

Earlier in the day, Ryan Moore had begun his round with five consecutive birdies courtesy of some stunning iron play and picked up another on the ninth but bogeyed the last to record a 67, the joint low round of the day so far along with Kevin Chappell

Louis Oosthuizen recorded his first sub 70 round of the week with a 69 that gave him the clubhouse lead on four under alongside Steve Stricker.
