Singh happy to have Els in Fiji

Local hero Vijay Singh is delighted to be in the company of good friend Ernie Els at this week's Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways.

Singh and South African Els, who have won seven Major Championship titles between them, are the headline names in the field as this event returns to the European Tour schedule for the third year in a row.

Els is making his first appearance in Fiji at Natadola Bay Golf Club this week, on a course Singh helped redevelop ahead of last year's tournament.

And Singh is pleased to welcome former World Number One Els to his native Fiji.

He said: "I've known him for a long, long time.

"We played together in Europe when he first came on and we just stayed friends, and now he's moved to Florida.

"Any time I get a chance we can have a game but we have a couple of drinks together as well, so maybe this week.

"Yeah, he's a good guy and we did a golf course together as well in Malaysia, so he's a good friend.

"He said, 'You really designed this thing?' I said, 'Yeah, it took a long time' but he loved it.

"He's enjoying it and obviously the view is just incredible. You cannot ask for any better view.

"I don't think there's anywhere else in the world you can play golf and see a view like this. It's just unbelievable."

Singh arrives in Fiji fresh from finishing in a tie for 14th at The Senior Open Presented by Rolex at St Andrews last week.

The 55 year old is excited to be back on home soil and is looking forward to getting started.

"I had a long way to come but what a place to come to," said Singh. "I mean, the weather's unbelievable today, I couldn't ask for anything better.

"I'm looking forward to it. Being around, seeing the changes that I made and it coming in really well, everything I hear right now is all raves, so I'm all excited."
