Shipco Masters qualifier expected to entertain

The qualifying tournament for the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon’s Golf Club will be hotly contested for with several well-known players set to battle it out.

Gary Wolstenholme

Five places for the Shipco Masters – the first 2018 Staysure Tour event on European soil – are available at the qualifying tournament taking place today and tomorrow.

Gary Wolstenholme – three-time winner on the Staysure Tour – is one of the familiar faces pushing for an opportunity to play the inaugural Shipco Masters. The 57 year old claimed his first Staysure Tour win in 2010 before winning twice in 2012 at the Mallorca Open Senior and Benahavis Senior Masters.

Joining Wolstenholme in the qualifier is Staysure Tour regular and former European Tour winner Jeff Hall. The Englishman has played ten seasons on the over-50s circuit and will be looking to start his 11thcampaign on the Staysure Tour at the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon’s Golf Club.

Many Danish players are considered as having a good chance with Bjørn Nørgaard, Lars Honoré and Peter Jeppesen set to tee off. If successful, they would add to the Danish presence at their home tournament with two-time Staysure Tour winner Steen Tinning and local pro Lars Løgstrup already part of the field.

More than 100 players from ten nations have entered the qualifying tournament aiming to gain a place in the Shipco Masters for the chance to play for the €350,000 prize fund and the €40,000 first prize, as well as test their golf against former Ryder Cup stars Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam.

“As it is very difficult both to get on the tour and to maintain your place, we have experienced a great interest in the Qualifier. Several players have told us how happy they are to get this chance and wish there were more tournaments on the tour that would create an opportunity like this one,” said Shipco Masters General Manager Henrik Bergqvist.
