Setting the Scene: The Scioto Country Club

Scioto Country Club is famous for being the course where Jack Nicklaus went from pudgy young junior to a world beater.

Designed in 1916 by Dick Ross, this course has an unrivalled heritage. Despite being renovated in 2008 by Nicklaus himself, the course still retains many elements of the Ross’s architecture including greens nestled in the terrain and plenty of subtle problems which defend the course from the power of the modern game.

Measuring 7,140 yards from the championship tees, this course is by no means the longest when compared with many of its American counterparts. However, it will provide the Senior Tour players with plenty to think about when they tee off on August 11th.

Gentle slopes on the approaches has golfers delving for their yardage books while natural contours in the fairways make placing drives all the more difficult. Furthermore, due to the remodelling of the greens to USGA standard, the greens at Scioto can run as quick as any. This can be particularly punishing given that they were already rated among some of the fastest in the US.

Scioto is a course built in the old mould. While it should be a joy to play and should produce some low scores, Senior Tour players must be aware that a lapse of concentration at Scioto can be punishing to say the least.
