Sergio Melpignano: 1946-2015

The European Tour today pays tribute to Sergio Melpignano, who died last weekend after a long battle with cancer.

Sergio Melpignano

Melpignano hosted the European Challenge Tour Grand Final at his magnificent Apulia San Domenico Golf from 2005-2012 and became a treasured partner of The European Tour in that time.

Born on July 29, 1946 in Fasano, in Italy’s far south-eastern region of Puglia, Melpignano, rose to prominence as a tax lawyer in Rome, establishing a hugely successful law firm in the Italian capital city.

Financial success allowed Melpignano to pursue his dream of bringing world class tourism to home town of Fasano and the region of Puglia. He, with the help of Marisa, developed the Masseria San Domenico – the beautiful farm buildings which date back to the 16th century and in which he, Marisa Lisi and children Viola, Aldo and Francesco had enjoyed many family holidays.

Melpignano’s vision knew no bounds. He then developed his 18-hole championship golf course, San Domenico Golf, before opening another two hotels the Masseria Cimino – a beautiful farm building behind the 17th tee – and the stunning Borgo Egnazia Resort to complete his dream.

The hallmark of everything Melpignano did was quality, and when he expressed an interest in hosting the Challenge Tour’s Grand Final, the last event of the Challenge Tour season found the most exceptional home.

“Sergio was a great friend and will be sadly missed,” said European Challenge Tour Director Alain de Soultrait. “By moving the Grand Final to San Domenico he put his course on the map and we will never forget what he did for Tour and the Grand Final over a period of nine years. He was a visionary and that was reflected in everything he did – in business and in his passions of golf and tourism.

“The quality of the hospitality and the impeccable standards he demanded of his golf course and hotels was incredible, but he was also a gentleman who loved being around the players at the Grand Final and really getting involved in the event.

“He was more than a sponsor or partner. He quickly became a friend and someone you could trust. We will miss his passion for golf and for life and our thoughts and prayers are with Marisa Lisi, Viola, Aldo and Francesco at this difficult time.”
