Peter Senior sits three shots behind leader Olin Browne at the halfway mark of the US Senior Open in Ohio.
The Australian followed his opening round 69 with a 67 to move to six under par for the Championship, lying in sixth place.
Senior, who began his round on the tenth hole, dropped a shot on the 14th before he birdied the 17th and 18th and then the first. He picked up further shots on the fourth and seventh to move firmly in contention for a maiden Senior Major victory.
“The back nine plays so much more difficult than the front nine, and if you can hold it together on the back nine, you should be able to make a couple birdies on the front side,” said Senior.
“So I birdied 17 and 18 today to turn one under on the back side, which sort of set up the round, and I made a couple more after that, which was good.
“I'm back in the tournament now. I'm looking forward to the weekend. I'm playing reasonably well, so, you know, you never know what can happen.”
The four-time European Tour winner celebrates his 52nd birthday on Sunday and leads the European Senior Tour challenge at Inverness Club, with defending champion Bernhard Langer in a share of 16th place after a second round 69.
Langer is three under par for the championship, six strokes behind Browne whose 9 under par total of 133 ties for the lowest 36-hole score in the history of the US Senior Open.
The score of 133 matches the two round totals of Dave Stockton (9 under) in 1992, Simon Hobday (9 under) in 1994, Bruce Fleisher (9 under) in 2000, Tom Watson, Loren Roberts and Craig Stadler (9 under) in 2005 and Tim Jackson (11 under) in 2009.
The second round, which was delayed by two hours and 45 minutes, was suspended because of darkness at 8:56 p.m. It will resume at 7:15 a.m. Saturday. Seven groups (21 players) did not finish second round play.
