Charl Schwartzel started his 2013 European Tour campaign and the first quarter of the Genworth Performance Award in superb form, winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship and finishing in second place at the Joburg Open.
The former Masters Tournament champion won the Alfred Dunhill Championship by 12 strokes, in the process topping both the Greens in Regulation and the Putts per Round statistics categories at the stunning Leopard Creek Golf Club.
The South African’s fine form continued at the Joburg Open, where he finished seventh in both the Greens in Regulation and Putts per Round categories. He then recorded his third top-five finish of the season in the Maybank Malaysian Open in March.
Schwartzel’s consistent presence near the top of the leaderboard ensured that his Stroke Average and Prize Money per Tournament rankings were also impressive for the first quarter, as he came third in both categories.
And with an average ranking across all categories of 16.42, Schwartzel won the Genworth Performance Award for the first quarter quite comfortably.
The Genworth Performance Award for the second quarter was won by Mikko Ilonen. The Finn’s putting was exemplary at the Volvo China Open, where he ranked second and third in the Putts per Green in Regulation and Putts per Round categories respectively.
Ilonen continued this fine form in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, where he finished top of the Putts per Greens in Regulation and third in the Putts per Round categories, en route to recording a 12th place finish in The European Tour’s flagship event.
At the Nordea Masters in June, Ilonen’s putting was once again his main strength which, together with strong showings in the Greens in Regulation (third), Driving Distance (sixth) and Driving Accuracy (20th) categories, ensured not only that he strolled clear of a world-class field to win by three strokes on 21 under par, but also secured the Genworth Performance Award for the second quarter.
