Ryder Cup heroes head to Portugal

Five of Europe’s Ryder Cup winning heroes will put team allegiances aside when they compete against each other for the coveted Portugal Masters title from October 14-17.

Lee Westwood

World Number Two Lee Westwood will defend his title at Oceânico Victoria Golf Club and will be joined in the field by four of his Teammates from The Celtic Manor Resort; fellow Englishman Ross Fisher, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenéz and the Italian brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari.

All five played a major role in Colin Montgomerie’s European Team reclaiming The Ryder Cup in Wales and have been in fantastic form over the last 12 months.

Westwood, who won the inaugural Race to Dubai, finished runner up in both the Masters Tournament and Open Championship while Jimenéz has won three times in 2010.

Edoardo Molinari captured two titles – the prestigious Barclays Scottish Open and Johnnie Walker Championship and Gleneagles – to force his way into The Ryder Cup Team alongside Fisher who stormed to victory in the 3 Irish Open.

Francesco Molinari, who partnered his brother against the United States, has been one of the most consistent players on The European Tour over the past year and will be looking to go one better than in 2009, when he finished runner up to Westwood in the Portugal Masters.

Also in the field for the €3million event will be three of Montgomerie’s Vice Captains – Thomas Björn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley.

Peter Adams, Championship Director, said: “We are delighted to have five of our Ryder Cup winning Team playing in the Portugal Masters and I am sure there presence will add to what is a fantastic tournament on The European Tour.”
