Rose puts major focus on Masters bid

Justin Rose is excited about the prospect of chasing a second Major Championship at the Masters Tournament after a brilliant 2015 season in golf's biggest events.

The Englishman makes his 11th appearance at Augusta National this week, where he has never missed the cut and enjoyed his best finish of a tie for second last term, preceding top tens at The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship.

He already has one Major in his trophy cabinet courtesy of his US Open Championship victory at Merion in 2013, and admits his season is now more focused on adding a second to his collection.

"Winning at Merion was a product of that thought process and beginning to take the Majors more seriously," he said.

"I think you need to get to the point in your career where you can maybe sacrifice one or two other things to solely focus on the Majors. I would say I still am not at that point where it's just the Major Championships that have my complete attention, but certainly I build my year around them.

Every decision I make year round is to stay fresh or to do well in the Major Championships. I think those are really what I'm chasing down now going forward - Justin Rose

"I do feel a lot more comfortable in them, because I think coming into anything prepared, you feel a lot more comfortable and confident."

Rose's share of second last season saw him finish four shots behind the record-equalling 18 under par performance of Jordan Spieth, and the 35 year old admits he would happily take his 2015 turn for the next decade at Augusta.

"Essentially I was beaten by an all-time great performance," he said. "So I take a lot of confidence from that; that any other year or many other years, that level of performance is good enough to win.

"If you get beaten by a better guy on the week, you tip your cap. But I know that what I was able to do last year tells me I've got what it takes to win the tournament."

While Rose's focus may be on a Green Jacket this week, the Briton has one eye on the return of golf to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

At Number Nine in the Official World Golf Ranking, he is on target to secure a place in Brazil in the summer and, should he qualify, he intends to take in the entire experience.

"Fortunately for us we have a few opportunities a year where we get to step into the realm of being a great player," he said. "Obviously other athletes have to wait sometimes four years for their crack at the big one.

"I'm planning on going down there early, taking in the opening ceremony and treating it as a once in a lifetime experience and opportunity.

"Should my career look something like Justin Rose, multiple Major Champion and a gold medallist, I think it's going to have its own very special asterisk being by it at the end of your career.

"It's tough to compare it to a Major Championship, but I think it holds itself on its own."
