Rose keeping his eyes on the prize in Rio

Justin Rose may be enjoying soaking up the Olympic experience, but he insists he is entirely focused on winning the gold medal come Sunday.

The Olympic Men's Golf Competition tees off in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday as golf makes its return to the world's biggest sporting festival for the first time since 1904.

Rose has already been in Brazil almost a week after arriving in time for the opening ceremony on Friday night and has been sharing his experience on social media, taking in the swimming and tennis among other things.

At 10.58 on Thursday morning it is business time for the 2013 US Open champion, though, and he is determined to take home a medal for Great Britain.

"It's what everyone's here for," he said. "In the wider Team GB, it's what everyone trains for. It's what they expect. I think it's the kind of event that there's three places that are worth shooting for and then there's kind of - you were there to compete as an Olympian.

"Other than that, there's a pretty finite goal this week. It's either achieve or you don't.

"But saying that, you're going to come out of this week with a memory that will last a lifetime. If you don't come away with a medal, I think you're still going to look back fondly on the experience.

Obviously as a competitor, you're gunning for the top - Justin Rose

Rose has been struggling with a back injury recently but achieved top 25 finishes at The Open Championship and US PGA Championship and, while he believes Sweden's Henrik Stenson is the favourite this week, he is not playing down his own chances.

"I would say I'm on the short list," he said. "I think Henrik is probably the favourite. I'm right there, for sure. I'm playing well and I think if I have my week, I'm going to be as hard to beat as anybody. Feeling good about the course. Feeling good about my preparation and looking forward to it.

"I haven't had something click yet for a while, although I know things haven't been that far off. I'm just waiting for my run and I would say this would be a good week to start."

Danny Willett

Masters Tournament winner Danny Willett is the other man representing Team GB in golf and he has joined Rose in staying in the athlete's village alongside the likes of reigning British gold medallists Andy Murray and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

The Englishman is enjoying being part of the team and has been practising with Rose, but is determined to beat his countryman on the Olympic Golf Course.

"Me and Rosey had a good nine holes, talking through different things, you're helping each other out," he said.

Come Thursday morning, it's like the gun goes off at a 100‑metre final. The guys might be chatting, might be helping to stretch and as soon as the gun goes off, you're trying for yourself - Danny Willett

"So I think you'll see a very different vibe around this place come Thursday. Saying that, I'd love for me and Rosey to get a gold and say, silver, but I'm not going to stand here and say I'd prefer Rosey to get a gold, it doesn't work that way."

Keep up to date with all the Olympic action on Twitter and Facebook.
