Justin Rose has been named on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, in recognition of his victory in the US Open Championship in June.
Rose, who burst onto the radar as an amateur in 1998 when he finished fourth in The Open Championship, claimed his maiden Major Championship at Merion Golf Club, holding off American Phil Mickelson and Australia’s Jason Day to win by two shots. He dedicated the victory to his late father.
The 33 year old follows Rory McIlroy, who was nominated last year, and is up against athletes
Mo Farah, Christine Ohuruogu and Hannah Cockroft, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, cyclist Chris Froome, sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, jockey AP McCoy, cricketer Ian Bell and rugby union star Leigh Halfpenny on the shortlist.
The awards ceremony takes place on Sunday December 15 in Leeds and voting is by telephone and online.
Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson, who won The 2013 Race to Dubai in stunning fashion earlier this month, has been nominated for two awards in the Swedish Sports Gala, which is set to take place in Stockholm on January 13, 2014.
Stenson has been shortlisted for Male Athlete of the Year and in the Achievement of the Year category.
