Rory vs the Robot: Every Shot Imaginable

Rory McIlroy has won Major Championships, Ryder Cups and been World Number One, but in the latest instalment of Every Shot Imaginable he faces arguably his toughest test yet.

Rory v Robot

Forget long shots over water, lengthy putts or rivals like Tiger Woods and Luke Donald, in this three-minute video the Northern Irishman is faced with a robot and a washing machine.

As a boy McIlroy would hit balls into his mum’s washing machine to practise his chipping, and he showed off his skills on a chat show on UTV when he was eight years old.

But can he still do it when the washing machine is 150 yards away, and raised 50 feet in the air? And will he do it before the robot?

The state of the art robot featured in the film was borrowed from Golf Laboratories; an independent testing facility that tests golfing equipment for many of the world’s top manufacturers, based in America. Professional stand-up comedian Geoff Norcott provides the voice of the robot, which regularly taunts McIlroy in the video, filmed at the PGA National Resort & Spa, Florida

The Every Shot Imaginable campaign began in 2010, when four golfers – Rhys Davies, David Howell, Paul McGinley and Marcel Siem – skimmed a ball 200 yards across a lake to hit a floating 9-inch gong.

The next challenge involved Johan Edfors, David Horsey, Thongchai Jaidee and Simon Khan trying to smash a clay pigeon from the sky with a golf shot, which was followed by the gunpowder shot and the magicians challenge at Gleneagles last year.

The “Every Shot Imaginable” YouTube channel, which also features out-takes plus extra content from the Tour, has had 13.5 million views.
