Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final: Meet the field

The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final takes place this week from October 31-November 3 at Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca. With 20 players set to earn life-changing DP World Tour cards for the 2024 season, there’s all to play for.

John Parry

After missing out on retaining his DP World Tour card 12 months ago, John Parry guaranteed an automatic return after becoming the second player this year to record three Challenge Tour wins. Victories in the Delhi Challenge and the Blot Open de Bretagne were followed by a third triumph in the Italian Challenge Open in September.

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen climbed to the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings for the first time with two wins in three weeks across March and April, and he’s been inside the top two ever since. His third victory of the season in the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG ensured automatic promotion to golf’s Global Tour. Since then, he’s impressed on the DP World Tour to earn a better playing category for next season. He'll still tee it up this week looking to top the Rankings, but he’s now exempt from earning one of the 20 cards on offer, meaning that card will go to the 21st player in the Rankings.

Hamish Brown

Hamish Brown has been a model of consistency on the Road to Mallorca, making the cut in each of his starts this year. A maiden win in the Kaskáda Golf Challenge in June catapulted him into the top 20 on the Rankings for the first time, and he’s been a regular fixture since, adding a second title in the Hainan Open to all-but guarantee promotion.

Conor Purcell

Conor Purcell boosted his chances of promotion with a sensational performance on the island of Ireland, winning a first title in the Black Desert NI Open in front of family and friends. He then added a second in the Hangzhou Open, the penultimate event of the season. Purcell knows Alcanada well having teed it up here last season.

Oliver Lindell’s form coming into the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final has been nothing short of exceptional. He is the form man on the Challenge Tour having recorded top ten finishes in each of his last seven starts to catapult himself into promotion contention. The only thing missing from his resume this season is a win.

Angel Ayora

One of the youngest players in the field this week, Angel Ayora has made a sensational start to life in the paid ranks. After turning professional at the start of the year, he claimed a maiden title in the Rosa Challenge Tour in September to boost his promotion chances. The Spaniard has also teed it up on the PGA TOUR this year, where he successfully made the cut.

Joakim Lagergren

Joakim Lagergren surged towards the top end of the Rankings thanks to a phenomenal run of form in the summer months. After finished second in the Black Desert NI Open presented by Tom McKibbin, he would go one better a week later in the Irish Challenge. A second win of the season followed two weeks later which all-but secured his return to the DP World Tour.

A tied second place finish in the Delhi Challenge – just his second start of the season – was a sign of things to come for Jack Senior in 2024. Alongside consistently making cuts, he’s racked up six other top ten finishes, including four in five weeks during the summer months, and is well-placed to secure a return to the DP World Tour.

Joel Moscatel

Joel Moscatel joined the winner’s circle in memorable fashion by birdieing the closing hole of the Challenge de España to claim a one stroke victory on home soil. Six weeks later he registered a second win, this time in France in the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge, where he came out on top in a playoff.

Robin Williams will tee it up on the DP World Tour next season following a stellar year. He won’t play this week in Mallorca, but has already guaranteed Category 10 status for the 2024 Race to Dubai. That, coupled with Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen's performances, will mean that the last of the 20 DP World Tour cards on offer will go to the 22nd player in the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

Mikael Lindberg

Mikael Lindberg made a fast start to the 2024 Road to Mallorca with a playoff victory in the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open, the second event of the season. He’s been ever-present inside the top 20 on the Rankings since, with second and third place finishes in back-to-back weeks in August cementing his position in the promotion places.

A five-time winner on the DP World Tour, Alexander Levy is set for a swift return to golf’s Global Tour after losing his card in 2023. Four top ten finishes in a row across events in India and the UAE back in March saw him hit the ground running, and after adding two more in the following months, he’s almost guaranteed promotion as he heads to Mallorca.

Just 12 months ago, Brandon Robinson Thompson came within one shot of securing a first promotion to the DP World Tour in Mallorca. He’ll have the chance to go one better this year after turning his 2024 campaign around with a third-place finish in the Irish Challenge before triumphing a week later in the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A.

Björn Åkesson completed a sensational return to professional golf when he secured a maiden Challenge Tour title in the NMB Championship in South Africa at the beginning of the year. The Swede had retired from golf in 2017 after losing his DP World Tour playing privileges and falling out of the love with the game but could continue his fairytale return with a strong week in Alcúdia.

Tapio Pulkkanen

Tapio Pulkkanen finished as the Challenge Tour Number One in 2017 before spending six full seasons on the DP World Tour. The Finn has recorded six top ten finishes during the 2024 season, and also teed it up for Finland in the Olympic Games.

Pierre Pineau

Pierre Pineau is playing the best golf of his career to date and has been inside the top 50 in the Road to Mallorca Rankings all year. This is the Frenchman’s third full season on the Challenge Tour, with consistency the key to his success this term. He’s only missed four cuts from 27 starts, recording eight top ten finishes in the process.

Martin Couvra

Martin Couvra was the last man in the field at the 2023 Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final and has enjoyed another stellar year to make it back-to-back outings in Mallorca. The young Frenchman has recorded six top ten finishes to be handily placed for a run at promotion this week, something which he could achieve in his first full season as a professional.

Two-time DP World Tour winner Lucas Bjerregaard has been in resurgent form during the second half of 2024. The Dane, who won the Portugal Masters and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2017 and 2018 respectively, registered four top ten finishes in consecutive weeks during the summer. During that period, he narrowly missed out on a third DP World Tour title, finishing second in the Danish Golf Championship.

With a good week in Mallorca, Sam Hutsby could earn a second promotion to the DP World Tour, ten years on from his first. The Englishman finished second in the Dimension Data Pro-Am at the start of the year and edged closer to the top 20 on the Rankings thanks to a fourth place finish in the Czech Republic in early October.

Nicolai von Dellingshausen

Nicolai von Dellingshausen seems to be doing just that, with his game having trended in the right direction for several weeks now. Three top five finishes in his last six Challenge Tour starts, and a tied 17th finish on the DP World Tour have boosted his chances of a return to golf’s Global Tour.

Jamie Rutherford returns to Mallorca having narrowly missed out on promotion here 12 months ago. The Englishman eventually finished 24th on the Road to Mallorca Rankings then, and he’s in position to challenge for promotion once more thanks to seven top ten finishes in 25 starts this year.

Euan Walker

Euan Walker is back in Mallorca for a third successive year, having climbed into promotion contention by winning the Swiss Challenge at the end of September. After finishing 24th and 26th in the Rankings in the last two years, he will be hoping this week could be the one where he cracks the top 20.

Wilco Nienaber

Wilco Nienaber is a prodigious talent and is known as one of the longest hitters in the professional game. He’s mixed his time across both the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour this term, making 15 of 19 cuts on the Road to Mallorca, registering three top tens in the process to be well-placed going into the final event.

Félix Mory

This is the fourth consecutive year that Félix Mory will tee it up in the Challenge Tour’s end-of-season showpiece. He will be hoping it’s fourth time lucky, with the Frenchman now well-versed in what it takes to succeed at Alcanada. Five top ten finishes this season, including three in a four event stretch at the start of the season, have put him in position to challenge once more.

He’s enjoying his best season to date with three top ten finishes and will tee it up for the first time in the season finale.

Christofer Blomstrand

Christofer Blomstrand secured a maiden Challenge Tour title in August, triumphing in the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge supported by Finnish Golf Union to catapult himself into the promotion mix. The following week, he showcased his promotion credentials once more, finishing tied fifth in the Danish Golf Championship on the DP World Tour.

That moved the Zimbabwean up from 74th in the Rankings to inside the top 30, giving him the opportunity to return to Mallorca for a second-successive season.

Five top ten finishes this year, including three in his last seven starts this season have given him a chance to achieve just that.

One of the most experienced players in the field, David Horsey will be looking to use that to his advantage in Mallorca this week. The Englishman is a four-time DP World Tour winner, with this week being his first time back at a Challenge Tour Grand Final since he finished as the Number One back in 2008.

He’s recorded one other top ten and two top 20 finishes in his last five starts and arrives in Alcanada as one of the form men on the Challenge Tour.

He’ll be hoping that form returns this week in Mallorca.

Ben Schmidt surged into the promotion conversation with two of his best performances of the season when he needed it most. Two top tens in two weeks and he’s up to a season-high 38th and in with a chance of gaining a DP World Tour card.

Nicolai Kristensen will tee it up in the Challenge Tour’s season finale for the fourth successive year, having come close to promotion on each of his three appearances to date. It’ll also be his third outing at Alcanada, as he looks to use his experience around the testing layout to his advantage.

As one of the youngest players in the field, it’s certainly been a year to remember for Frank Kennedy. Back in July he joined the winner’s circle with victory in the Euram Bank Open in Austria, backing up his outstanding amateur career with a first win in the paid ranks.

A tied eighth finish in the Hangzhou Open two weeks ago saw Lars van Meijel climb 12 places in the Road to Mallorca Rankings to make sure of his place in the field in Alcanada for the second successive season. A good finish this week could see the Dutchman return to the DP World Tour for the first time in four years.

The Road to Mallorca season couldn’t have got off to a better start for Rhys Enoch. The Welshman impressed in the opening week, carding four consecutive rounds of 66 to win the SDC Open in South Africa. Shortly after that result he record a top ten finish in the Porsche Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour.

Gary Hurley

Top ten finishes: 1

Gary Hurley enters this week hoping to secure a return to the DP World Tour but will likely need to finish inside the top two in Mallorca to do so. The Irishman came close to earning a maiden Challenge Tour title back in June, eventually settling for a solo second place finish in the Challenge de Cádiz.

Wil Besseling

Top ten finishes: 2

Wil Besseling has been shown plenty of consistency throughout 2024, making 16 of 18 cuts. Out of those 16 cuts made, he has two top tens finishes. The first came in the Kolkata Challenge in March before he recorded his best result of the season far with a tied third in the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in June.

Hayden Hopewell

Hayden Hopewell made the 72-hole cut at Final Stage Qualifying School last year to earn full playing privileges on the Challenge Tour for the first time. It’s been an impressive debut season for the Australian too. He finished in third place in the NMB Championship back in February, before recording back-to-back top ten finishes in September.

John Axelsen will need to secure a maiden Challenge Tour title if he is to earn one of the DP World Tour cards on offer at the end of the week. Recent form suggests he could do just that, with all three of his top ten finishes this season coming in his last seven starts.

Justin Walters will tee it up in Mallorca as the last man in the field. In fact, the South African was only confirmed in the field four days before the start of the season finale, with the field extended one place due to Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen earning a DP World Tour card through his performances on golf’s Global Tour this season. Walters will need to win this week to make sure of promotion.
