Speaking ahead of this year’s Senior Open Presented by Rolex, held on the famed Old Course at St Andrews – the same venue where Rocca finished runner-up to John Daly in 1995 – Rocca couldn’t hide his delight at his compatriot’s success.

“I was really emotional,” said Rocca. “Maybe more so than Francesco at the time – but I’m sure it will have sunk in for him and he will have realised what he has achieved.

“He played so well all week and made just one mistake. He has improved so much over the last two years, and it’s amazing to see him became The Open Champion.

“Carnoustie is my favourite course, and to win there you have to play against the course and not worry about all the other people playing.”

After his victory, Molinari dedicated his sixth European Tour title to Rocca whom he described as his ‘hero’ and ‘idol’. The victory saw him become Italy's most prolific winner on the European Tour, surpassing Rocca's own total of five.

Rocca said: “If I were to stand here and have people say that I am still the best Italian player after so many years, I’ve not done a very good job.

“After seeing Francesco win The Open, I can now say that I have done a very good job. He will inspire so many people with this victory, and I hope that he will go on and encourage many more people from our country to play golf. He’s up to number six in the world now, he’s one of the best.”
