Relecom raring to go in Belgium

All eyes might be on European Tour player Thomas Pieters this week, but Pierre Relecom, another young Belgian, is aiming to take advantage of some home comforts at the KPMG Trophy.

The 29 year old hails from Brussels so is commuting daily to the picturesque Golf de Pierpont, south of Waterloo.

“It’s about a 30 minute drive from Brussels, near Charleroi, so it’s very easy,” said Relecom, who currently lies 84th in the Road to Oman Rankings.

“We travel so much so it’s actually really nice to be able to stay at home this week and sleep in my own bed.

“I played a lot of junior events at this club so I know it fairly well. It’s in great shape so it should be a really good week, especially if the weather stays nice.”

Relecom, who claimed his first Challenge Tour title last season, at the Swiss Challenge, made his debut in the KPMG Trophy in 2007 and three years later finished tied 34th in the event having opened with a six under par 66.

“So much has changed since I first started playing in this event,” he said. “I’ve been improving a lot and I’m much more used to being a full-time professional and travelling all over the world to tournaments.

“I’ve got a full-time category on the Challenge Tour and I’m enjoying it. Hopefully a second win is not too far away.

“On the Challenge Tour everything has improved a lot in the last five or so years. The courses are much better and are set up really well, and everything is prepared so well for the players at every event.”
