The Spaniard, who won this title in 2021, was set to play in his ninth U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort but will now miss his first Major Championship since 2016.

Rahm, 29, withdrew from his most recent competitive appearance in Houston on Saturday with an infection in his left foot.

In a statement released on social media, he said: "After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long term health, to withdraw from this weeks US Open Championship. To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing championship! Hopefully I'll be back in action sooner than later!"

The former World Number One's place in the 156-player field is taken by Jackson Suber, 24, a first alternate from the Rockville, Maryland, final qualifier.

Suber, who will compete in his first U.S. Open, has recorded two top-10 finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour this season.

He will play alongside Major champions Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama in the first two rounds in North Carolina.
