Quiros confirmed for Volvo World Match Play

Alvaro Quiros will be looking for victory on home soil when he tees up in the Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín from May 19-22, 2011.

The Spaniard, who led after the first round of the Masters last week after shooting a seven under par 65, joins Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, Paul Lawrie, Johan Edfors, Robert Karlsson, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell,Y E Yang, Ross Fisher, Søren Kjeldsen and Francesco Molinari in the field.

Quiros is the first Spanish player to qualify for the Championship, which moved to Spain in 2009. He said: “I am so happy to have qualified for the Volvo World Match Play Championship. I was very relieved to find out on Monday that I had made it into the 24-man field as it was definitely one of my main goals this season.

“It is a world-class field and I am delighted that I will be part of it and hope that I will give the home fans something to cheer about.

“I really enjoy the mindset of match play and think the beautiful Finca Cortesin course is ideal to host this format.”

Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management Golf, added: “It is a great boost for Spanish golf and fantastic for the event to have Alvaro qualify and I know the local fans will be out to support him in force. As the field takes shape there are any number of intriguing matches to eagerly anticipate.”

On arrival at Finca Cortesín in May the players will be divided into eight groups of three players to be played out on Thursday and Friday, with 16 players progressing to Saturday in a knock-out format, with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday.
