Terry Price will be hoping a repeat performance in this week’s WINSTONgolf Senior Open, the scene of his runaway victory 12 months ago.
The Australian led by three shots heading into the final round at WINSTONgolf, 76 miles east of the German city of Hamburg, and finished with a flourish as a five under par 67 gave him a six-stroke win over Marc Farry and Barry Lane.
The €60,000 first prize helped Price finish 18th in the 2012 Senior Tour Order of Merit, and he will be keen to rekindle the memories of the triumph to improve on his current standing of 39th after a steady if unspectacular start to the 2013 campaign.
“It meant a lot to win out here in a field with players like Barry Lane and Bernhard Langer in it. Those two guys are among the best senior players in the world and there are so many other great players out here that it is a really great achievement to come out on top,” said Price.
“It was a pretty tough golf course that we played this week and I have to say that the conditioning of the course and the set-up of the tournament was just first class.”
Steen Tinning is one of the form men looking to prosper on the 6833-yard, par 72 course Open Course at WINSTONgolf.
The Dane, who combines playing on the Senior Tour with competing in Iron Man competitions, won the Berenberg Masters - also in Germany - last month for his maiden title since turning 50, and followed that with tied tenth place in the SSE Scottish Senior Open and tied 12th in the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters last week.
Spaniard Miguel Angel Martin is another player hoping to capitalise on some fine form, having finished in the top ten in his last three appearances, while a strong field also boasts Australian Peter Fowler, the 2011 Senior Tour Order of Merit winner, England’s Paul Wesselingh, currently second in the money list after two victories, and his compatriot Carl Mason, the most successful player in Senior Tour history.
