Press conferences with a difference for Senior Tour members

European Senior Tour members took questions from children at seven Newport schools in Virtual Player Press Conferences in the build-up to the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open next month.

Paul Wesselingh - the SSE Wales Senior Open Champion

Last year’s Wales Senior Open winner Paul Wesselingh, Welshman Mark Mouland, former European Number One Ronan Rafferty and two-time Senior Tour winner Phil Golding fielded questions from budding reporters at the South Wales schools.

The quartet answered questions from the Gwent pupils on their life in the sport ahead of the Wales Senior Open which will take place at the nearby Celtic Manor Resort from June 3-5.

Teachers and pupils alike praised the initiative set up by the European Senior Tour in partnership with Newport City Council and supported by the County Head of Education Resources.

The lucky children who took part are also being given the opportunity to meet their interviewed player in person when the Wales Senior Open tees off next month.

Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said: “The players that took part in the Virtual Press Conferences were delighted with the level of engagement of the pupils from the many schools in the Newport area.

“Their questions were well researched and it was particularly encouraging to learn that many of the pupils did not play golf, but were now minded to try the sport for the first time and were looking to attend the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open next month.”
