Poulter back in the hunt for maiden Major

Ian Poulter made back-to-back birdies at the start of his final round to edge back into contention for the US PGA Championship.

A disappointing third round 74 looked to have dented the Englishman’s hopes of a first Major Championship at Kiawah Island, but by swiftly moving to three under par Poulter was only four behind Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman took a three stroke advantage over Carl Pettersson into the final round after earlier returning to complete a third round 67.

Miguel Angel Jiménez was amongst the early movers - the Spanish veteran birdied the long second then holed his second shot to the par four third to swiftly reach three under for his round.

That took The Ryder Cup star back to one under par for the tournament – no mean feat given his second round 77 in the worst of the weather on Friday.

England’s Justin Rose joined Jiménez on one under when he set off with three straight birdies.
