Players target Volvo's 'Big Five' in South Africa

Volvo’s worldwide reputation for quality and innovation will be showcased at Durban Country Club this week when the brand once again breaks new ground with a record five hole-in-one prizes during the 2014 Volvo Golf Champions, the European Tour’s tournament of champions.

Everyone watching the event on site or on TV in approximately 150 countries will get to see Volvo’s extraordinary prizes for that rare but thrilling achievement, a hole-in-one. Many tournaments offer one such prize, and last year Volvo stepped this up to three. Now, they are going even further by including a prize for each of the four par 3s, and the driveable closing hole.

All in all, this means a record number of five hole-in-one prizes. With no halfway cut, each of the golfers taking part will get not just the usual two or four attempts, but an incredible 20 chances to claim one of the amazing prizes on offer!  Not only that, but the prizes are up for grabs for some amateur golfers too. Each of the 18 top finishers from the World Final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge will join the Pros on Friday for Playing With The Pros - and each will also have five opportunities themselves.

Bram van der Reep, Managing Director, Volvo Car South Africa describes three of the prizes; “The first of the five is on the second hole where the first golfer to hole his tee shot will get a 2014 Volvo S60 (worth US$ 47,000). This is just one of the models that are ‘Designed Around You’, our customer-focused initiative. Two holes later at the next par three is a superb Volvo V40 Cross Country (worth US$ 40,000) which has a very contemporary Scandinavian design, but with added attitude! And on the twelfth, there will be a Volvo XC60 (worth US$ 55,000) which is actually Volvo Car's best-selling model.”

The final two prizes are more unusual with the first coming at the final par 3, the fifteenth hole. Torbjörn Christensson, President Volvo Group Southern Africa, reveals more; “Any up and coming golf course builder would be happy to win that Volvo Backhoe Loader (worth US$ 75,000). Volvo Construction Equipment has designed it on feedback from customers around the world, making sure it meets their needs. And on the closing hole, a driveable par 4, we are offering the biggest prize of the five - the first golfer to hole his tee shot will win the all-new Volvo FH16 Truck
(worth US$ 200,000).”

Volvo’s superb range of trucks has been the subject of some massively popular YouTube video hits featuring the Ballerina Stunt and, more recently one starring Jean-Claude Van Damme which has been watched an incredible 66 million times.

Never before have there been five such varied and high-quality prizes on offer for a hole-in-one, and this is sure to create even more thrills and excitement throughout the week.

The Volvo Golf Champions takes place at Durban Country Club from January 9th to 12th, 2014. The elite field is open only to those who have won on Tour during the previous year or have more than ten career victories to their name. The 36 who have qualified include defending champion Louis Oosthuizen, and they will be battling it out for their share of the greatly increased USD 4 million prize fund.
