Kenya is just another one of the magical countries which makes the Challenge Tour’s international schedule so special and the players have been revelling in its unique splendour at the Barclays Kenya Open this week.
Morten Orum Madsen, who was the overnight leader following the first day’s play, has been enjoying the action off the course as much as the action on it as he visited a local elephant orphanage as part of a feature with the Challenge Tour’s television show, the Challenge Tour Series.
It is not the Dane’s first time in Kenya and he is thoroughly enjoying his Barclays Kenya Open debut.
“Kenya is awesome,” said the 23 year old. “I’ve been here a couple of times before and it’s always somewhere I look forward to coming. The weather is good this time of year and the people are great – everywhere you go you are greeted with a smile.
“It’s great that at the start of the season we go to some difference places. Colombia and Kenya are not necessarily places you’d go on your own so it’s awesome to see them.”
Seve Benson, meanwhile, has played every Challenge Tour event so far this season, meaning this is the third continent he has visited in as many months. He finished ninth at the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in India in January before a tied 62nd finish at the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic earlier this month.
He is particularly enjoying the delights of Kenya and the opportunity to sample some real local culture by opting to stay with a family nearby rather than a hotel.
“I’m really enjoying it this week,” said the two-time Challenge Tour winner, who was well placed after two rounds. “I’m staying with a lovely family in a big house with a pool, so I’m well set for a great week.
The Challenge Tour Series will begin in April on Sky Sports.
