Pigem pulls clear in Mauritius

Carlos Pigem swiftly took control of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open as the second round began at Heritage Golf Club.

With the habitual sunshine returning after Thursday’s unseasonal rain, the 24 year old Spaniard raced into a two shot lead having begun the day tied for the lead with Thorbjørn Olesen and Jeunghun Wang.

In the first event to be tri-sanctioned by The European, Asian and Sunshine Tours, Pigem, who plays on the Asian Tour but admitted after the opening round to seeking a category on The European Tour, bogeyed the first but then birdied the fifth, ninth and tenth to reach eight under par.

That put Pigem, who has had two top-ten finishes in his last five starts, two clear of Olesen – who was among the afternoon starters – and Sweden’s Pelle Edberg, who was three under for the day with two to play.

Andrew McArthur was a shot further back on his 36th birthday, as was three-time European Tour winner Pablo Martin Benavides as he continued his return to action having previously played a part-time schedule since losing his card at the end of 2012.
