Pieters on the move in Brazil

Thomas Pieters made a charge up the leaderboard as the second round of the Olympic Men's Golf Competition got under way in a rainy Rio de Janeiro.

Australian Marcus Fraser set a blistering pace on day one with a 63 and, while no one could catch him early on day two, Belgian Pieters made three opening birdies to get within a shot of the lead.

Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose were then a further shot back as European Tour Members dominated the upper echelons of the leaderboard.

The rain started around 8.45am and showed little sign of relenting for the early starters but Pieters, who teed off at 09.47, showed no ill effects.

The two-time European Tour winner made a birdie on the first and then played a wonderful bunker shot on the second to set up another gain.

He had driven the green at the third on day one for a birdie and a 326 yard tee-shot left him a short wedge in and helped him to a birdie-birdie-birdie start and a seven under total - one back of Fraser who had parred the first two holes.

Stenson got off to a brilliant start, taking advantage of the par five first and then holing a remarkable 60-foot putt on the second after flying his second shot over the back of the green.

The Swede then made an incredible par on the next after putting his tee-shot in the water, holing his putt from 108 feet to stay a shot behind the leader.

Finding a bunker off the tee on the next then led to a bogey and he was two back.

Justin Rose

Briton Rose was also at six under as he attempted to follow up day one's heroics when he made a hole-in-one on the fourth.

He could only par all four of the opening holes on Friday but an excellent bunker shot on the fifth and tee-shot to 13 feet on the next brought a pair of gains.

Germany's Alex Cejka was then at five under after making a single gain in his first eight holes.

Frenchman Grégory Bourdy had got to six under at one point but dropped back to four under after 11 holes, alongside Pieters' team-mate Nicolas Colsaerts, who birdied the first.

Dane Thorbjørn Olesen was then a further shot back after turning in 33 with four birdies and two bogeys.
