Pieters hits the front

South Africa's Brandon Pieters was the clubhouse leader midway through the first round of the Africa Open.

The Sunshine Tour regular opened with a seven under par 66 at East London Golf Club to move into a one shot lead.

Play had initially been delayed for over 90 minutes due to fog, but once the action got underway Pieters eagled his third hole of the day, the par five 11th.

Three birdies and three bogeys on his front nine saw him turn two under, but he then reeled off five consecutive birdies from the third.

One behind was England's Miles Tunnicliff - playing on a sponsor's invite after losing his card - France's Jean-Baptiste Gonnet and another South African, Jaco Van Zyl.

Another local favourite, Doug McGuigan, was joined by English pair Robert Rock and Ross McGowan on five under, one ahead of Ryder Cup Vice-Captain Darren Clarke, with Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen three under.
