Pettersson makes flying start

Sweden’s Carl Pettersson made a good start to the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational to establish a one shot lead during the first round at Firestone.

Starting on the back nine, the 24 year old had birdies at the 11th, 15th, 16th and second to reach four under par with six holes remaining.

That was one ahead of Korean K T Kim and former Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel.

The South African birdied three of his first four holes, while the group on two under included his compatriot Retief Goosen, World Number One Luke Donald and his fellow Englishman Lee Westwood.

Two-time US Open Champion Goosen birdied the 17th to complete a three under par 67, setting the clubhouse target one stroke ahead of Wales’ recent Irish Open winner Jamie Donaldson.
