Pair of aces boost US challenge

Matching holes-in-one from J B Holmes and Dustin Johnson kept the American pair at the top of the leaderboard midway through the third round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Johnson was the first to ace the par three fourth hole at Doral on Saturday, holing out with a seven iron from 207 yards to make amends in style for dropping a shot on the second.

And amazingly overnight leader Holmes then repeated the feat just two groups later, using the same club to hole out in a near-identical manner as his ball landed around 20 feet short of the pin and rolled into the cup at the perfect speed.

That vaulted Holmes to ten under par and briefly into a five shot lead, with playing partner Ryan Moore having taken a triple-bogey seven on the previous hole after finding the water with his third shot from a fairway bunker.

However, Holmes - who had three-putted the first from five feet - then dropped his second shot of the day on the seventh by duffing a chip after his approach had flown over the green.

And with Johnson picking up shots on the fifth and eighth, Holmes' lead was down to three shots over Johnson and his playing partner Henrik Stenson, the Swede following seven straight pars with an eagle from ten feet on the eighth.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen set the clubhouse target alongside Bill Haas, as a round of 67 left the former Open Champion four under.

England’s Lee Westwood was on the same mark with two holes left to play, one ahead of the group including Ryder Cup team-mate Sergio Garcia.

Westwood, playing in his 50th World Golf Championships event, bogeyed the last and said: "I think 70 is a pretty good score. I made a couple of mistakes out there. I hit a lot of good shots though and didn't get rewarded for some of them.

"I'm trying to keep myself in shape at the moment. I'm 42 in a couple of months but I still really feel fit and fresh and mentally sharp and keen to keep playing. As long as I am enjoying getting out of bed and practising and working on my game there's no reason I shouldn't carry on."
