Oosthuizen powers through

Louis Oosthuizen was delighted to overcome Webb Simpson and reach the quarter-finals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship for the first time.

The South African won six out of eight holes from the sixth to secure a 5 and 4 victory against the former US Open Champion, having gone from one up to one down early on when his eagle at the long second was usurped by consecutive Simpson birdies at the fourth and fifth.

“We both really started well,” said Oosthuizen. “I think Webb was three under through five holes and I was two under.

“Then I hit a few errant tee shots on ten and 11, but from there I made quite a few birdies coming in. He put himself in a few tough spots off the tee to make bogeys and pars, and I just for some reason made a few putts and made a lot of birdies.

“I've been striking it well the whole year, and I'm playing some of the best now. I feel I'm hitting the ball really well and just need to make the putts.”

The former Open Champion was especially pleased to wrap his contest up swiftly, with the prospect of a last-eight clash against Jason Day and potentially a semi-final to play on Saturday.

“It's a nice rest for me this afternoon,” he added. “I'll do a bit of work on the back, but I've got to start focusing on tomorrow's match.”
