Oosthuizen eyes St Andrews repeat

Former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen is feeling the St Andrews buzz again five years after his greatest triumph.

Oosthuizen catapulted himself into the big time with a stunning victory over the Old Course the last time The Open Championship was played at the Home of Golf in 2010.

The South African won by seven strokes to record what remains his only Major victory and he is relishing the chance to play the famous Scottish links again in competition this week.

The 32 year old played a practice round with compatriot Branden Grace on Monday and admitted the memories had come flooding back.

He said: "It's just great to be back here. The biggest was Monday, walking down 18, seeing the grandstands and remembering that moment walking in 2010 on Sunday afternoon.

"I played with Branden, whose caddie Zach was working for me then, and the two of us looked at each other, smiled, and said it was great to just do that walk again and feel that bit of magic around here."

Oosthuizen has sporadically threatened to rescale the heights he touched in 2010, since that remarkable success.

He finished runner-up at the Masters in 2012 after losing a play-off to Bubba Watson and produced a fine late charge to end up tied second at the US Open last month.

But in between those fine performances came numerous fitness issues, mainly back and neck injuries, including the recurrence up of an old whiplash problem suffered when being pulled by a boat in a rubber ring in 2005.

The successful managing of these issues is the key to his confidence now.

He said: "I'm feeling 100 times better than I was in the last two years and working on things constantly to get stronger and get better. I'm managing well and happy where I am.

"I feel confident playing, so I could actually do a bit more work on the putting green and out on the range, which you need to to be on top of your game."

Oosthuizen's superb performance in this year's second Major at Chambers Bay remarkably came after shooting a seven over par first round 77. Oosthuizen then carded rounds of 66, 66 and 67 to finish four under and just a stroke behind winner Jordan Spieth.

He played alongside Tiger Woods on day one - when the former World Number One took 80 - and the pair will again be together for the first two rounds at St Andrews this week.

Oosthuizen said: "I hope we have a better first round! Hopefully we can pull each other in the right direction this time.

"I always enjoy playing with him, so it should be fun. He's won twice around here. I want to see the way he plays this golf course.

"It's going to be good, just hopefully we make a few more birdies in the first round than we did at Chambers."
