Moments later it drops, the crowd engulf the Spaniard and he celebrates his 50th win on the European Tour.

Having missed out on a win earlier in the season at the Turespana Open De Canaria, by a single shot behind Jarmo Sandelin, Seve arrived at the Spanish Open determined to show his home crowd the magic that saw him win five Major championships from 1979 to 1988. Rounds of 70, 67, 66 and 71 saw the 38 year old win by two shots over fellow countrymen Ignacio Garrido and José Rivero.

The victory would be Ballesteros’ last win on the European Tour. Over the 19 years from 1976 to 1995, he played 256 events, won 50 times and finished in the top ten on 146 occasions (57 per cent of the time).
