Following rain delays, the leading duo both had 11 holes to play but wasted no time in setting the early pace.

Hot on their heels at eight under par is Andrew Buckle, while defending champion Alistair Presnell is at six under alongside James McLean and Damon Welsford.

O'Malley holed seven birdies through his back nine, and was delighted with his efforts.

"The first couple of holes I just hit it on the green and two putted and then I just got on a roll," O'Malley said.

"I haven't had the confidence with my putter for so long, but I've always putted well when I'm confident. So when I see them going in I just start thinking they will all go in and that's what it was like today. It was nice to get that feeling back."

Likewise Nitties was in a great frame of mind after finishing at nine under par.

"I tell you it is always hard setting your alarm in the 4's. It doesn't agree with me at all so that was very, very hard. But when you get moving and it's a perfect day, there's certainly worse places you can be on a perfect morning than on a golf course."
