Two-time Major Champion Greg Norman has confirmed his place in the field for the Omega European Masters, which returns to the superb Crans-sur-Sierre from August 30-September 2.
The legendary Australian won The Open Championship on two occasions, first in 1986 and later in 1993, and collected a further 12 European Tour titles during a glittering career which included an unbroken 331-week spell as the World Number One during the late 1980s and early ‘90s.
Norman has made six previous visits to Crans-sur-Sierre in Crans Montana, Switzerland, with a third place behind winner Nick Price at the 1980 Swiss Open – the predecessor to the Omega European Masters – his highest finish to date.
Affectionately known as the Great white Shark, Norman – who was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 – now divides his time between playing on the US Champions Tour and managing his various business interests, which include including golf course design, wine production, clothing, restaurant cuisine and boat building.
But he will make a rare foray onto The European Tour when the 78th edition of the €2.1million event returns to Crans-sur-Sierre, one of only two courses to have hosted a European Tour event in every season since the Tour’s inception 40 years ago.
The defending champion is Denmark’s Thomas Björn, who last year rampaged through the field with a closing round of 62 to see off Germany’s Martin Kaymer by four strokes.
