Noren into last eight after Reed rout

Alex Noren cruised into the quarter-finals of the WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play after storming to an impressive 5 and 3 victory over home favourite Patrick Reed.

Both men came into the clash with 100 per cent records after winning their group deciders on Friday.

But after Ryder Cup star Reed had won the first - his only victory of the day - Noren picked up six holes on his way to a comfortable win.

The Swede will face Australia's Cameron Smith in the last eight after he overcame an early two-hole deficit to beat Tyrrell Hatton 2 and 1.

Reed started brightly, tapping in his close-range birdie putt at the first to take an early one-hole lead.

But after the next two holes were halved in fours, Noren drained his 25-foot putt at the short fourth to level things up.

And the World Number 17 never looked back, firing another birdie at the fifth to edge ahead before winning the eighth and ninth holes to lead by three at the turn.

I'm very happy. He's such a tough competitor - Alex Noren

A brilliant tee-shot at the short 11th left Noren with five feet for his birdie, and with Reed unable to convert his birdie chance, the 35 year old found himself four shots clear.

Another birdie at the 15th sealed the deal for Noren, who was delighted with his win.

He said: "I'm very happy. He's such a tough competitor.

"I played well. I managed to hole a few birdie putts. When we both had good chances, he just missed and I managed to make those.

"It could have turned the other way quite easily. But I'm very happy."

Speaking about the prospect of facing Smith, Noren added: "I've never played with him. I know he's a nice guy.

"I've not really seen him play, so I don't know what to expect."

Englishman Ian Poulter is also through to the last eight after he beat Louis Oosthuizen, despite a stunning late fightback from the South African.

Match play specialist Poulter drew first blood with a birdie at the second and he double his advantage courtesy of a brilliant 36-foot putt from the fringe of the fourth green.

Oosthuizen got one back with a birdie at the fifth but Poulter won the sixth and seventh to establish a three-hole lead.

2010 Open Champion Oosthuizen won the ninth but with the 12th and 13th going Poulter's way, he was four holes up with five to play.

Oosthuizen was not finished yet, however. He made three consecutive birdies from the 14th, winning two of those holes to reduce the deficit to two.

I knew I needed to throw a lot of birdies out today and I did. I putted nicely - Ian Poulter

But with both men making par at the short 17th, Poulter advanced.

He said: "It was a tough match. I knew I needed to throw a lot of birdies out today and I did. I putted nicely, hit it nicely.

"You're going to be tough to beat if you make eight birdies. I knew I needed that today against Louis."

Poulter will face Kevin Kisner in the last eight after he beat fellow American Matt Kuchar by one hole in a thrilling encounter.
