Noren eases into last four

Sweden’s Alex Noren remained on course for a Scottish double as he beat compatriot Johan Carlsson 4 and 2 in the quarter-final of the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play at Archerfield.

Noren won the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart last month, and continued his love of the links with a remarkable scoring burst on the front nine.

A hat-trick of birdies from the third was followed by an eagle on the sixth to put him four up, and although a wayward tee shot on the 14th led to a first bogey of the day and allowed Carlsson to reduce the deficit, Noren sewed the contest up two holes later when his opponent failed to find a birdie.

"It was fantastic - especially the front nine," said Noren. "It was one of those days where everything goes your way.

"I'm very happy."

Noren faces James Morrison in this afternoon’s semi-finals.

Morrison is yet to play the 17th and 18th following his 4 and 2 win over Alejandro Cañizares.

The Spaniard turned one up, but Morrison turned the contest on its head with five birdies over the next seven holes.

The other semi-final will be an all-English affair between Anthony Wall - who finished his contest with South African Haydn Porteous in style -and Oliver Fisher.

Wall’s only victory in 488 previous European Tour starts came 16 years ago at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, but he chipped in for an eagle at the 18th to seal a two up win.

Another eagle on the long 11th had initially put Wall two up and, after Porteous halved the deficit, he went two ahead once more with a birdie from six feet on the 13th.

Back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th allowed Porteous to draw level, but Wall birdied the 17th before his grandstand finish.

Fisher fought off a strong fight back from Maximilian Kieffer to seal a 3 and 2 victory.

Fisher won three holes in a row from the second, only to bogey the sixth, ninth and tenth to hand Kieffer a reprieve.

The German failed to take advantage though, and tap-in birdies on the 12th and 13th put Fisher ahead again before Kieffer three-putted the 15th from ten feet.
