New era for The Senior Open Championship

The Senior Open Championship will begin a new chapter when it celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011, with The R&A and the European Senior Tour inviting interest from potential new presenting sponsors.

Walton Heath Golf Club will host the Championship for the first time from July 21-24, 2011, 30 years after the English venue hosted The 1981 Ryder Cup.

Bernhard Langer, the former Ryder Cup winning Captain and Masters Champion, will defend the title after winning his maiden Senior Major Championship at Carnoustie in July from Corey Pavin, the 2010 US Ryder Cup Captain.

With MasterCard’s three-year agreement as Presenting Sponsor having reached its conclusion at Carnoustie, the co-owners of The Senior Open Championship have opened the door to new potential sponsors to become part of the prestigious Championship, which is contested by some of golf’s most iconic Major winners and Ryder Cup players.

Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour on behalf of the Championship, said: “We have greatly appreciated our relationship with MasterCard over the past 11 years and The Senior Open Championship has benefitted from their excellent support.

“During that period, The Senior Open Championship has continued to develop into one of the most popular and respected events on the golfing calendar.”
