Morrison maintains birdie blitz in Scotland

James Morrison continued to bombard Archerfield with birdies as he took a commanding lead in his last-16 clash against Michael Hoey at the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play.

The Englishman has yet to see the 16th hole this week such is his form and he made seven birdies in each of his first two wins over Alvaro Quiros and Graeme Storm.

That fine form continued on Friday afternoon as he made four more gains and won the fifth, sixth and seventh holes to sit three up against Hoey after ten holes.

The other form man so far this week has been Matthew Fitzpatrick but the Ryder Cup hopeful left himself with a mountain to climb against Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares.

Fitzpatrick dropped his first shot of the week to lose the third and Cañizares then birdied the next two to take a three-hole lead with 11 to play.

Second seed Alex Noren was the new favourite to take the title after top seed Chris Wood's defeat in the last-32 and the Swede was one up against Nacho Elvira after a birdie on the fourth.

Wood's conqueror Daniel Brooks was two down to German Maximilian Kieffer after five holes but fellow Englishman Anthony Wall was one up against Australia's Richard Green after seven.

Local favourite Marc Warren had sprinted out into a three-hole lead against Joburg Open champion Haydn Porteous but the South African had reined him back to all square after 11.

Another Scot - Richie Ramsay - was struggling at three down against Oliver Fisher at the turn, while Johan Carlsson was two up against Chris Paisley after eight.
