Montgomerie signs off in style

Kenny Perry won the Constellation Senior Players Championship after a final round six under in an event which saw Colin Montgomerie finish joint-ninth on his Champions Tour debut.

Perry passed third round leader Fred Couples to triumph by two shots ahead of his playing partner Couples and a third American, Duffy Waldorf.

Holes 16 and 17 were key for the 52 year old as birdies on both saw him break free of his nearest challengers.

It was a fitting way for Perry to seal victory after fighting back from eight shots down on Couples, who will defend his Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex title at Royal Birkdale from July 25-28, with his final round of six birdies emphasising his improving form.

Montgomerie ended the weekend strongly with his final round 65 seeing him jump seven places up the leaderboard.

The Scot dropped just one shot at the eighth, with six birdies ensuring a strong finish as he concluded his first foray into the senior ranks a shot behind Bernhard Langer.

Langer, who has already won twice on the US Champions Tour this season, ended the week as the leading European ahead of Montgomerie, with two-time Senior Major Champion Roger Chapman also enjoying a good week with four rounds in the 60s en route to finishing tied 18th.

Chapman finished on five under, a shot ahead of Sandy Lyle, who closed with a 66, while Mark Mouland was another to finish well with a closing 65.
