Montgomerie's ace wins 2015 European Senior Tour Shot of the Year

Colin Montgomerie has added another award to his trophy cabinet after it was announced that his hole-in-one at the season-ending MCB Tour Championship has been voted by My European Tour members as the 2015 European Senior Tour Shot of the Year.

The Scotsman’s eight iron from 164 yards at the 17th hole at Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius, received 38 per cent of the votes to beat Miguel Angel Jiménez, who received 31 per cent of the vote for his superb approach shot at the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex.

Montgomerie’s hole-in-one helped him equal the course record during his second round of 64 which also included five birdies, providing the platform for the eight-time European Tour Number One to claim the title and consolidate his commanding position at the top of the Senior Tour Order of Merit to lift the John Jacobs Trophy.

“You always hope it’s going to drop in but of course it rarely does, so it was very nice to see it disappear from view,” the 52 year old said of his hole-in-one.

“Normally I hit my eight iron 158 yards, so I was on the limit but the wind was helping us slightly. I struck it very nicely, then it got a kindly bounce and started tracking towards the hole, so at that point I started getting a little excited.”

Montgomerie is not the only one celebrating, however. By voting and then being randomly selected from My European Tour fans who participated, Mikael Charpentier from Finland has won a two nights’ stay and three rounds of golf at The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales.

Charpentier said: “I am really surprised and delighted to win the European Senior Tour Shot of the Year competition, I’ve never won anything before and so I’m really happy to be able to go back to Wales.

“I’ve only been there as a child, so it will be great to be able to go back to play such a famous venue as The Celtic Manor Resort. I’m really looking forward to it and still can’t quite believe it, I feel very lucky.”
