Montgomerie and Pavin set to lock horns

American Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin expects a friendly atmosphere when he lines up alongside European counterpart Colin Montgomerie at the Volvo China Open.

The two skippers for October's Ryder Cup clash at The Celtic Manor Resort in October will be joined by Thai Thongchai Jaidee for the first two rounds at Suzhou Jinji Lake Golf Club.

But despite what is certain to be a fiercely contested match in Wales, Pavin insists things will be amicable this week.

"I look forward to playing with Colin, it's been a long time since we played a competitive round with each other," said the American.

"It'll be fun and we'll have a few things to talk about and discuss. We've always enjoyed each other's company out on the golf course and I don't think there will be any fisticuffs out there or anything like that!

"It will be fun and we will have a good time. It's important for us both to play well and have a good tournament and we are both pretty competitive guys so we will be doing our best to have a good time."

Montgomerie has previously landed nine Volvo titles and has experienced success on Chinese soil, but talked down his chances of a first victory since 2007.

"Yes I've won here in the mainland of China before and i look forward to another good performance," said the Scot.

"I wouldn't say I'm going to win but we look forward to having a good performance and as i said the course is in fine condition and I hope we have a good competitive tournament here and I think that it should be very good.

"Our thanks to Volvo obviously for presenting this tournament so well and they have done over the years. I've played many times in Volvo China Open and this should be no different so I look forward to it."

Unlike his opposite number, Pavin has never played in China before and admitted to being impressed by the facilities.

"It is the first time I've been here on the mainland in China and like Colin said hopefully the weather will get better but the golf course is excellent and in tremendous shape and the hotel is very nice," he added.

"I have watched Chinese golf on TV and seen beautiful courses so i expected to see something nice but it perhaps surpassed my expectations. The golf course is very nice. The hotel is fantastic and the practice facilities excellent. Can you control the weather?"
