Micheel to make Staysure PGA Seniors Championship debut

Major Champion Shaun Micheel will make his debut Staysure Tour appearance when he tees it up at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

The 2003 US PGA Championship winner joined the senior ranks at the beginning of the year and will break new ground by making his European Staysure Tour debut at London Golf Club when the event returns to Kent from August 1-4.

Micheel wrote his name in the history books in 2003 when he clinched the US PGA Championship by two strokes over Chad Campbell. The American memorably sealed the title with a stunning second shot on the final hole, landing his seven iron within inches of the hole from 175 yards, tapping in for birdie to clinch Major Championship glory.

Having celebrated his50th birthday in January, Micheel first featured on the over-50s circuit at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in May, and is now looking forward to testing his game on English soil as he prepares for the test at London Golf Club in August.

“I did play London Golf Club a number of years ago and it’s a fantastic course. I’m excited to come back to show support to Staysure and the great fans in England,” he said.

“I’ll be interested to see how the golf course is set up. I’m getting used to playing courses that are a bit shorter than what I saw as a much younger player. Everything is based on weather conditions and more specifically the wind. That’s always the great equaliser and I hope that we get weather conducive to good scoring.”

Micheel will be one of several Major and senior Major winners in the field, including Roger Chapman, Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie, who set the course-record last year with an opening round of 63, nine under par, on the International Course.

“It’s a testament to the event and the golf course that there is such a great field,” he said. “I’ve played with Colin and Paul and it’s an honour to be in their company. They are household names in Europe and I’m proud to share the golf course with them.

“To have Major Champions and World Golf Hall of Fame members competing is what all tournaments strive for and everyone who comes out to watch will be greeted with high level golf.”

Ryan Howsam, Chairman of Staysure, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Shaun to our event at London Golf Club in August. As a former US PGA Championship winner, he joins what is already a stellar field with multiple Major and senior Major champions, Ryder Cup players and European Tour winners.

“We are proud that Shaun has chosen to play our event and we look forward to seeing him in action. The tournament is very special and with players like Shaun in attendance, it promises to be a tightly fought and exciting contest.”
