Merion calling for Major Champions

All eyes will be on Merion Golf Club next week for the 113thUS Open Championship, where the 2011 Champion Rory McIlroy will get his quest for a third Major title underway alongside World Number One Tiger Woods and reigning Masters Tournament Champion Adam Scott.

This marquee trio, boasting 17 Major Championships between them, is sure to garner plenty of attention when they get underway from the first tee at 1.14pm local time.

Just two groups earlier, the English duo of Luke Donald and Lee Westwood will begin their campaign for a maiden Major triumph alongside the 2010 US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer at 12.52pm, before European Tour stars Thongchai Jaidee, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño and Thorbjørn Olesen all get going just half an hour later.

Big hitters Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson and Nicolas Colsaerts are sure to provide some fireworks in the morning half of the draw when they take to the course from the 11thtee at 7am, while just half an hour later the all-South African triumvirate of Major Champions Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel tee it up with the 2010 Players’ Champion Tim Clark.

Following on from that, at 7.44am, will be Sergio Garcia and three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington alongside 2009 Open Champion Stewart Cink, while 11 minutes later Ian Poulter will take to the course with Jason Dufner and Boo Weekley.

Simon Khan, who topped European Sectional Qualifying at Walton Heath just 24 hours after his play-off defeat to Matteo Manassero at the BMW PGA Championship, begins his campaign at 8.13am alongside America’s Ted Potter Jnr, while Webb Simpson will start his title defence from the first tee at 1.36pm with Ernie Els and American amateur Stephen Fox for company.
